Antihypersyllabicsesquipedalian Needs Your Help

On October 26th 2004, I became, at least according to Google, the first one to use the word “antihypersyllabicsesquipedalian” on the web. That was this blog post where I talked about what the word meant and how I found out about it. Since then, as you can see on the chart above, usage of the word on the web (once again based on the number of Google search results) increased slowly from 2004 through 2009. But toward the end of 2009, a dramatic decline began. Now, I know that how Google reports the number of search results probably has a big effect on this, not just how often people are using the word. However, to combat this decline, more people have to use the word and use it more often. So, antihypersyllabicsesquipedalian… a person who hates long words… use it as often as you can!

    How do you say it???

  • From SM via Facebook:

Just like it is spelled! :-)

    Anti – like Antifreeze (Against)
    Hyper – like hyperactive (Many)
    Syllabic – Like Syllable (Syllables)
Sesqui – Sort of like “Says Quee” (one and a half)
Pedal – like the ones on a bicycle (having feet)
ian – as in thespian (a person who)

Putting the roots together it ends up being something like “a person who is against words with many syllables that are a foot and a half long”, but “a person who hates long words” is close enough. :-)

:-) Ya, I can figure that out broken down but am afraid I’d switch a couple of them and have it come out wrong or not be able to remember all of it. Had a hard enough time singing, “Rose Flavored Fingers” to Annie the other day. For some reason it twisted my tongue.

Great word though!!! And awesome that you were a FIRST!!! :)

I was first to use it on the web (at least according to Google) but of course not the first to coin it. Like I mentioned in my original 2004 post ( http://www.abulsme.com/comments.php?id=D353_0_1_0_C ) I first learned of the word as a kid from an article on long words that my dad clipped from the paper.

    Anyway, some sentences:

    * I would claim to be an antihypersyllabicsesquipedalian, but my mere choice of words while making the claim would belie my veracity.

    * She showed her antihypersyllabicsesquipedalian tendencies by the look on her face when she read my posting on interesting long words.

    * His word choice indicates that he is definitely not an antihypersyllabicsesquipedalian!

My sister is always having me tutor her on her English homework… I think we’ll throw this word into an essay next time she asks. :-)

Can Alex say “antihypersyllabicsesquipedalian” yet? If not, let’s race. He has a headstart because he is older and he has a daddy who has known this word since a young age, but I’m going to teach it to Annie and whoever gets it on video first wins! :>D

Go Sam! Great word! Good sentences! First use on the internet??? Wow! Of course the tendency today is to eliminate major parts of even shorter words as in lol or tmi !!!

Hmmm, I wonder how long it will be before it’s added to the word list for the National Spelling Bee… :)

‎@GWR: No, Alex can’t say it yet. So you’re on! It is a race!

@RMB: I do admit, I sometimes just say ahssp!

@LL: I’m sure it will make it to that list soon! :-)

  • From SM via Facebook:

Aw shucks! OK, that’s fair. From now on it will always be the full antihypersyllabicsesquipedalian!
