Curmudgeon’s Corner: Talk Good Enough

On this week’s Curmudgeon’s Corner, Sam and Ivan talk about the Alabama Senate results, possible bias in the Mueller investigation, the Republican Tax Bill, Net Neutrality, Trump’s judicial nominations, and the Patreon fee structure misfire. Plus Ivan makes fun of Sam’s speech, and Sam’s son Alex pipes up a few times.

    Hi Sam,
As one of your big fans, I love to know your opinions.. But, since I read much faster than you and Ivan talk, is there anyway I could have a written transcription?? Sorry, but reality of how I distribute my time is a big factor.
    Lots of love,
    Diane

  • Transcription services seem to cost on the order of at least $2 a minute, perhaps more. So getting a typical one of our shows transcribed would cost at least $250, possibly much more. Well beyond our budget at the moment. :-)

However, I also have time budget issues with podcasts. Almost all, if not all, podcast listening software offers the ability to listen to the podcasts at extra speed though. I listen to all my podcasts at 1.5x normal speed for instance, and get very frustrated listening to anything at 1x speed. 2x is usually too fast for me though, unless it is someone who talks very slowly to start with.

How are you listening? Just hitting play on the blog posts here you don’t have any speed options of course. But really the blog posts are just intended as announcements that there is a new episode, and to maybe get some new people to check it out. Expectation is that most people would be listening through some sort of podcast listening software.

Most people listen to podcasts on their smartphones at this point.

On iOS the most popular podcast software is of course Apples own “Podcasts”, but I would recommend something like Overcast if you just listen to a few podcasts, or iCatcher if you listen to a bunch.

I don’t have an Android phone, but here is an article listing some popular Android options: https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/best-podcast-apps-for-android/

If you are on a Mac or Windows computer, there are actually apps you can use, but another option is a web based service. For instance, Overcast, which I mentioned as a good iOS app, is also available just via the web. For instance, on Overcast you can find Curmudgeon’s Corner here, including the ability to play episodes sped up: https://overcast.fm/itunes266565555/curmudgeons-corner

That would probably be my best advice. A) Listen on a mobile device so it can just be in the background while you do other things anyway rather than being tethered to a computer — I do most of my podcast listening during my commute each day, and B) Experiment with playback speed, and go as fast as you can go without it being difficult to listen to, maybe work your way up to higher speeds over time.

    Hope that helps!
