It was actually interesting to watch over the past three months though.

Here is a chart of the performance of every book that made the Top 5 at any time during the run of my list.  (The lines are extended to show 7 days before and 7 days after the days each book was actually in the Top 5.)

During the 95 days I have been running this analysis, there have been four books in the #1 slot:

• 2013-05-11 to 2013-05-13: The Great Gatsby

• 2013-05-26 to 2013-06-11: Inferno

Gone Girl and Gatsby swapped a bit before Gatsby took the clear lead.

Inferno is obviously crushing everybody at the moment.  Almost 2% of everybody tweeting they finished a Kindle book recently were tweeting about finishing Inferno.

So I have started to track that.  Here are the charts so far (one with a linear scale, one with a log scale to better show the early detail):

Minus any new laws recently signed that might not have made it to my source at congress-summary.com yet, as of 155 days into each of the three Congresses (that would be June 7th of the first year in all three cases) we have the 111th having 25 laws enacted, the 112th having 17 laws enacted, and the 113th having 13 laws enacted.

It is interesting to note the somewhat similar patterns in the shapes of the curves, indicating that although the velocity may be different, there seems to be a nice pattern to how Congress ramps up, when it takes breaks, when it speeds up and does more, etc.  Bursts around holidays and in the lame duck period, lulls during the summer, bigger lull in the run up to elections, etc.  (Of course, to really examine this, you’d need to look at more than 3 congresses, the similarities may not bear out with robust scrutiny.)

So far I am correct in my prediction that the 113th would enact fewer laws than the 112th.  But there is still plenty of time before the end of the year for this to change and for Ivan to be proven right instead.

At the moment I am not making any statement on if that is a good or a bad thing.  :-)

I’m now saying the same thing for [...]]]> A little under two weeks ago, I did a post “If You Read Me on Facebook“.  The gist of it was I was no longer going to repost the daily twitter summaries from this blog onto Facebook, although regular manual posts would continue to get automatically posted there.

I’m now saying the same thing for Google+, for basically the same reasons.  If you want to see what I post to twitter, either follow me there, or follow me directly on Abulsme.com.  You can even sign up for a daily email with links to my posts from the previous day if you care for that.

As with Facebook, I’ll continue making sure my manual posts get cross posted to Google+…  for now.  But I’m giving a heads up that I may stop doing that soon as well.  Google Reader made it pretty easy for me to click a couple buttons and share my own posts on Google+.  Google Reader is of course shutting down soon.  My replacement of choice so far, Feedly, also has a share to Google+ feature, and while it works fine when it works, it has been inconsistent at best for me, and I’ve usually gone back to Google Reader to do this little bit of things.  When it goes away, I probably won’t go through a lot of extra effort (read any) to make sure things get on Google+.  Especially since it seems there are very few people who use Google+ to follow me.  There are some.  Just not many.

If Feedly improves on this front, then I’ll continue, otherwise…  I dunno.

If you are one of the very few people who normally get my content via Google+ and if this will be a pain to you, let me know.  If there is a lot of demand, I may continue even if it is a bit more work.  If not…  well, you can find my stuff in the ways I described in the second paragraph…

I’ll keep posting the “regular posts” (as opposed to the automated Twitter summaries) to Google+ at least until Google Reader is shut down.  After that, no promises.

We were at Paine Field Aviation Day.  It was fun.  Alex was not very impressed by the smaller planes (or the tortoises), even when they flew fast and low (well, not the tortoise).  But in between the planes that were actually part of the air show, 747′s and 787′s were taking off, [...]]]>

We were at Paine Field Aviation Day.  It was fun.  Alex was not very impressed by the smaller planes (or the tortoises), even when they flew fast and low (well, not the tortoise).  But in between the planes that were actually part of the air show, 747′s and 787′s were taking off, landing, and doing emergency stop tests and other things…  and THAT had his full attention.

It wasn’t too horribly crowded, which was great, and it wasn’t hot, also great.  And the mix of planes, from the historic WWII aircraft and such, to the 787′s and Cessna’s in between was just fun.  As was simply being able to stand right by the runway and watch as the big planes land and take off.  You can’t really do that at commercial airports any more.

I remember when I was a kid my parents taking me to the observation deck at Raleigh/Durham airport in North Carolina, where we could just sit and watch the planes.  You can’t really do that any more because of all the security theater, which is a shame.

This is not the last Enderverse book, but this is the book that Brandy had gotten me for Christmas/Birthday/Something that had prompted me to systematically use all my fiction slots from May 2009 to February 2011 for reading all of the Ender Series books up until that point.  I liked the series, but for the most part it started strong and got weaker as it went.  And almost two years of no fiction other than Orson Scott Card was probably a bit much.  I’m not sure I’ll give that sort of special treatment to a series again, even if I am gifted a book that is not the next in the series I have to read.  After this book was read, the next Ender Series book…  Shadows in Flight is on my big list of potential fiction to read but is not given any preferential place relative to anything else.  Which means, at the moment, it has a 1 in 203 chance of being picked the next time I pick a fiction book to read.

Anyway, how was the book itself?  Well, the whole enjoyment score I mentioned in my last post is out the window, because I read a physical paper version of this book.  But my 2+ year old memory of it is basically that it was OK.  Not great.  Nothing special.  But OK.  It filled some additional gaps in Ender’s life that hadn’t been covered in the previous books, and it started typing things together with the Bean books in the series.  So, fine for Ender completists, but unless you are making sure you read all the Ender books, I probably wouldn’t bother.

I can’t use the locations per day as a score, but it still can be ranked within the physical books by page per day, so lets give that a shot.  The last ten books reviewed at this point are:

For awhile, I’ve had something set up on my blog that autoposts to Facebook whenever I make a new post. Well, it was mostly autoposts. Any post that I manually created would do an automatic notification to both Facebook and Twitter.

But I also have a daily automated post at 00:00 UTC each day that gives a digest of my tweets from the previous day. For whatever reason related to how that digest is created, those would not autopost to Facebook. I’d have to remember to manually push a few buttons to post those things to Facebook. This was kind of a pain, I’d often not remember, and then end up “catching up” by posting a bunch of them at once.

That kind of sucked.

I’m not going to do that any more. (In fact, I stopped about a week ago.)

My “real” posts will still get repeated on Facebook. But if you are interested in the things I am posting on Twitter, well, follow me on Twitter. Once again writing these years after reading the book. Perhaps I’ll catch up someday. Ha!

Well, in any case, this is the classic Woodward and Bernstein narrative of their watergate investigations. More than two years later, my main memory of this is being disappointed that it ended before the resignation, so didn’t take the story the whole way. Yes, I know they did another book that covered the last days of the Nixon presidency, but I still wished this just continued.

I have a vague memory of thinking that while the events themselves were interesting and of course are historically important, than the actual tone of the writing was a bit dry and “this happened, then this happened, then this happened” for my taste. But it has been a long time since I read it, so who knows.

I’ve been toying with giving a star rating or some such when I do these things, but realize I actually have a better measure of how much I enjoy a book, and it is already listed above. When I am really into a book, I make time to read. I read in the spare moments during the day. A minute here or there whenever I catch a chance, and I end up choosing to read instead of watching TV or even instead of sleeping sometimes. I end up reading it faster. Not in terms of how fast I actually read while I’m sitting with the book, but in terms of how much I read per day. Meanwhile, for books I am NOT enjoying, I end up forcing myself to read a little every once in awhile, but don’t actually seek out time to read, so those go much more slowly.

Of course, this is also effected by how much free time I have.  Although there are exceptions, in recent years this has been relatively steady, so I’ll just ignore it at the moment.  :-)

And yes, this is also somewhat determined by the “difficulty” of the reading. A light fiction book is going to “flow” better than a dense textbook. But I think that also matches up with my enjoyment. The dense textbook may well provide me with valuable information, but I’m not sure “enjoy” would be the right word to describe my interaction with it.

With physical books, if you look at pages, that is of course a measure that depends on the size of the pages, the size of the print, if there are photos or illustrations, etc, etc, etc. But if I’m reading on a Kindle, most of that is abstracted out by the “location”. And look there above, I already have locations per day. With my patterns of reading (one book at a time, always finish any book I start), this is a good measure, at least for books I read on Kindle.
