March 1998 Trip: Day 1
The first day of the trip was the drive from my apartment in Plainsboro, New Jersey to Rebecca Livingston and Chris Morrow's house in Reston, Virginia. This was mainly a leg for testing our equipment. We were unable to get a cellular connection to the internet to do live updates as we went, but we did get all the GPS III interfacing set up correctly to download out path into an IBM Thinkpad Laptop. At the same time we set up a QuickCam to take some pictures along the way. This was connected to a Macintosh PowerBook 5300c. All and all a nifty setup. For this part of the trip we just went interstate most of the way. Not super interesting, but because of all the initial setup time we needed to go quickly. Plus the non-interstate way to go is almost all metropolitan areas. Very slow. Not all that scenic. So we didn't do it. Instead we did I-95. We did get a nice view of Phaladelphia and Wilmington, Delaware though. And we saw a bunch of traffic. Then when we got to Rebecca's house we went out to eat at a fancy restaurant.
