My World Now

The view of the world right now, centered on me, as it should be.

image

Up on the image is oriented toward the current location of galactic north.

(OK, this is actually what it looked like about half an hour ago, it took me a little bit to get it online… since then galactic north has moved a little bit relative to the planet, and of course the sun has too, and the cloud patterns may be a few hours old… but basically this is what it looks like.)

It is pretty. I like it.

Where I Have Been

Just saw a link on Fark to a cool little Tool from World 66 that lets you easily plot a map of where all you have been in your travels. So of course I did so… I used my memory and also looked through the Visa’s in all my old passports going back to childhood. Here is what I came up with:

Note: On the world level they count Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands as countries, and on the Europe level they break the United Kingdom up into its parts… I wouldn’t have done either of those, but I’ll stick with how they set it up.

Countries of the World: Canada, United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Angola, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, United Kingdom

Countries of Europe: France, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, England

States of the USA: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachussetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin [Edit: See my comment in the comments section for revised map based on new information.]

Provinces of Canada: Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec

And that’s it! I need to get back into the grove of the random trips so as to fill in some more! Like I’m not sure how I missed Kentucky and Michigan! I have a call in to my mom to see if I visited either of them as a child and don’t remember. Those are the only two east of the Mississippi that I haven’t been in. And the next random trip will fill out Mexico, whenever we are actually able to get to it…

Anybody else want to share those? After you do it, they give a chunk of HTML which I think (although I am not sure) will work if you just cut and paste it into the comments here. [Edit: Looks like the site might be farked now… if it doesn’t work, try again later…] [Edit again: Farking has subsided, and pasting the HTML it gives you works fine except for a little extra code that shows up, but that is fine, it works.]

Of the regular readers here, I bet Ivan can do best on contries worldwide. Not sure if he is also who would do the best on states.

Marcus Beat Me

And beat me by five months too! I’ll have to get that HDTivo sometime! But new house and computer and maybe car will call come first. Darn Marcus! Well, at least it is broken. :-)

HD Tivo becoming unusable over the last few days
(Marcus Alzona, TivoCommunity)

Over the past few days, my HD Tivo (unmodified, working fine for 5 months) has becoming unusable. Its the same occasional problem I used to have with an SD DirecTivo or an SA Tivo – sometimes, you’d press something on the remote, and it either wouldn’t respond, or respond in a few minutes to all your presses (not a remote issue – you’d see one of the Tivo’s LEDs flicker as it receives the command). The problem would go away on its own most of the time, and a reboot would always fix this problem.

Oh, and hi to Marcus and congratulations on the new baby. :-)

The Rat Bird

Our birds haven’t done this… yet.

‘Rat bird’ feels at home
(Katrien Smit, News 24)

Rottie the rat thinks he is a bird… But it comes as no surprise when one realises that Madam and Tokkelos, two lovebirds, are raising this rodent. … “One day we realised the birds were carrying on as if they were breeding but there were no eggs. That’s when we discovered the small pink rat in a nest.”

Sara is Famous!

At October 28, 2004 18:36:46 UTC out of the blue I got an email from Frank:

Sam,

Did you know one of YOUR pictures is “famous”?  I just got this e-mail, and I immediately recognized one of the pictures. (You’ve got to admit, that’s a classic photo!)  Speaking of which, what happed to that and other pictures that used to be on your web site?  I went looking for them (cuz I couldn’t remember your dog’s name) and couldn’t find them.

– Frank

And forwarded along under the message was one of those emails that gets forwarded all around the Internet with inspirational little messages interspersed with cute pictures of animals. But lo and behold, one of the pictures in the email was this one. From my website!

That is a picture of Sara, the puppy I found trying to cross I-95 in July 2001. The picture is from August, when I came home one day to find out that Sara had basically torn up the whole house. I had posted the picture on PhotoSig where it is still the fifth highest rated picture using the camera I had at the time. Then this guy saw it there and made it the Daily Pet Photo on his site (with permission). And I guess someone saw it there, or somewhere else, and decided to add it to this inspirational email thing and then forward it to all their friends, who forwarded it to all their friends, who forwarded it to all their friends, until it eventually got to someone who knew me and had seen that picture before.

On the one hand, it is uncredited, and that isn’t the coolest thing, but on the other hand, my very own picture of my very own dog (well, my mom’s dog now) is making the rounds in one of those email messages that gets passed around forever all over the place! How cool is that?

I’ve seen bunches of versions of this email with most of the same pictures and slightly different messages, but this is the first time I have seen one with my picture of SARA in it!!! Sara is famous now!

Here is the message itself, including my pic and all the rest that were in the email. This is the best I could reproduce the email in this forum…

Thoughts for good days

Always try to help a friend in need.

Believe in yourself.

BE BRAVE!….

But remember… its ok to be afraid sometimes.

Give lots of kisses.

Don’t be overly concerned with your weight,
its just a number!

Always try to see the glass half full.

Meet new people, even if they look different to you.

Remain Calm…

…even if it seems rather hopeless!

Take a nap if you need one..

Have a good sense of humor and laugh often.

Love your friends, no matter who they are.

Don’t waste food.

Take an occasional risk.

RELAX… EVEN, ON THOSE STRESSFUL DAYS!!

Try to have a little fun each day

AND its important, no matter what…

…to work together as a team,

Share a joke with your friends and neighbors,

and fall in love with someone special

Say I love you often.

Express yourself creatively.

Always be up for surprises.

Share with a friend.

Remember the saying,
Good things happen to good people!

There is always someone who loves you
more than you know.

Exercise a little each day!

Live up to your name.

Hold on to good friends;
they are few and far between!

Remember this advice and have a wonderful day!

Slightly Safer

I updated the State Department Warnings Graph again. Since last time the world is a little safer. Down to 28 countries with warnings from 29 before. The Turks and Caicos and The Bahamas are now safe to visit again. Guess they fixed their hurricane damage. Meanwhile though the Cayman Islands got hit by Hurricane Ivan and got added to the list. So wait a little while before you visit there, K?

The Poet In Me

As a quick explaination of the last three posts… I was actually just testing some formatting stuff to help Rebecca out on something which may hit her motel sometime in the future. Those wacky poets and their formatting!

The poems were just random words to fill the space in order to test the formatting, not deepfelt expressions of my innermost heart and hours of effort put into the poetic artistry…. yeah… thats it… that’s the ticket!

Red Robin

The red robin was in the house abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
it tried to eat the yellow mouse. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
But in its excited haste abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
it only ate the yellow paste. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

Tiny Rodents in a Storm

Awww… poor baby squirrels!

Couple Care for Wildlife After Hurricanes
(Amanda Onion, ABC News)

Part of the squirrels’ misfortune lies in the fact that most squirrel species have young around the peak of hurricane season — in late August and early September. Since the animals usually nest in trees, their homes are vulnerable to the strong winds of a hurricane. When trees are downed, the young squirrels are left homeless, shivering in the cold and separated from their parents.
